A Message from Your BBB President
Sylvia Campbell |
|
Dear Accredited Businesses, AB Company Employees and Consumers: News Flash! -"The Nevada Consumer Affairs Division has closed and is no longer accepting complaints" (or relaying information to consumers about Southern Nevada businesses). WHO ARE YOU GOING TO CALL? THE BETTER BUSINESS BUREAU! WE ARE THE PREMIER RESOURCE FOR VITAL BUSINESS INFORMATION AND ARE 54 YEARS STRONG! What does and can the Better Business Bureau of Southern Nevada do? The Bureau works to protect Nevada consumers and ethical, legitimate businesses from deceptive and fraudulent business practices in the Southern Nevada marketplace by making available pre-purchase, investment and donation information. Information on most Southern Nevada companies may be obtained in person at the Bureau's offices or by telephone, fax, email or by accessing the Bureau's web site at southernnevada.bbb.org. Whether you are a consumer or business wanting to do business with another business - CHECK OUT THE COMPANY FIRST! If you are planning on making a major purchase, investment or donation, CHECK IT OUT! Save yourself time, money and trouble by obtaining as much information as possible about a company with whom you are planning on doing business. Remember verbal doesn't mean what it did in the old days when it was a man or woman's word. ALWAYS READ AND UNDERSTAND A CONTRACT BEFORE SIGNING IT! The Bureau can answer questions such as, is the company properly licensed, does it need a competency license, does it have complaints or actions through other agencies and what is its marketplace reputation with the Better Business Bureau? BE AWARE! Nationally, in 2008, the following are the top ten complaint and inquiry categories: Complaint - Cellular Phones Service & Equipment, Auto Dealers - New Cars, Banks, Internet Shopping, Television - Cable, CATV & Satellite, Collection Agencies, Auto Dealers - Used, Furniture - Retail, Telephone Companies and Satellite Equipment & Supplies. Inquiries - Roofing Contractors, Contractors - General, Mortgage Brokers, Movers, Construction & Remodeling Services, Auto Dealers - New Cars, Work-At-Home Companies, Auto Repair & Service, Plumbing Contractors and Home Builders. Through the Bureau's web site, and various publications, newsletters, alerts, and pamphlets, the Bureau strives to educate consumers and businesses on various kinds of timely matters such as identity theft, check fraud which is of epidemic proportions, telemarketing abuses, and new scams to avoid. Don't let unscrupulous individuals steal your life, business or reputation. BE INFORMED. When in doubt or when in need of information, contact the Bureau. WE ARE HERE FOR YOU! Until next time, Sylvia |

FRAUD ALERT FROM THE OFFICE OF ATTORNEY GENERAL
Property Tax Savings Fraud Alert |
|
Carson City, NV - Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto has issued the following consumer advisory as part of an ongoing effort to educate consumers.
The Nevada Attorney is warning consumers that letters which look official are being sent out by an organization which calls itself the "Property Tax Review Board". The Board claims that it can lower property taxes for property owners.
The "Property Tax Reduction Form" claims recipients can save hundreds of dollars on their property taxes for a fee of $189. Carson City Assessor Dave Dawley indicates that the information contained in the letter is based on California law, not Nevada law. In Nevada, property owners do not pay taxes based upon market value. Taxes are calculated on replacement cost new, less depreciation. The Nevada Legislature put a property tax cap into effect in 2005 using the 2004-2005 base year for property taxes. Therefore, the savings the Property Tax Review Board promises are based on faulty data and a Nevada Property owner will probably see no savings. If Nevada property owners have questions about the calculation of their property taxes, the local county assessors will provide assistance free of charge. |

Inbound Marketing - The Next Phase of Marketing |
|
By Suzanne Vara
The way we advertise and market a business has changed drastically as consumers are more in control of the information they receive and digest. Traditional marketing & advertising is placing ads on TV, radio and in print whereas inbound marketing is solely online. Traditional advertising coined as outbound marketing is uninvited, interrupts consumers and is low in the consumer decision making and sales process, where as inbound marketing is consumers searching and seeking companies via the internet when getting ready to buy.
Inbound marketing is marketing focused on getting found by customers. It combines search engine optimization, social media and pay per click advertising to connect with potential customers. The goals of inbound marketing are be found and developed by interacting with customers so they feel connected to your product/services.
Inbound Marketing has three key components:
1. Content - Content is king! The key is to have pertinent, targeted and relevant content for your product/service. The content is designed to attract potential customers and turn them into buyers.
2. Search Engine Optimization - SEO is necessary to be found. It encompasses creating your website with great targeted content and building inbound links to your site. Inbound links serve as 75% of the page ranking system on the search engines. The more inbound links from quality sites, the higher you will rank for your targeted keywords.
3. Social Media - Social media amplifies the impact of your content. Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook and blogs are all social media sites that help to distribute your content and build relationships. Inbound marketing is not replacing outbound/traditional advertising. They work together to increase visibility and awareness but are two completely different types of marketing. Outbound marketing still allows the company to control the brand where with inbound marketing, the control is shifted to the consumer. The consumer is in control as they communicate with many people about their experiences.
Inbound marketing is the rave. Companies are embracing inbound marketing as in order to remain competitive. Companies need to be found on the web in order to reach customers with targeted messages that they seek out and not ignore.
In our next series, I will focus on search engine optimization and tips on getting found.
Not sure where to begin? Suzanne Vara is CEO of Kherize5, an interactive advertising and marketing agency for small businesses that focuses on inbound marketing.
